Loreto

P1010074Welcome to Loreto, Mexico our fourth stop on our Mexican Rivera group cruise in November 2005. Loreto is located in Baja California Sur, Mexico. On the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula facing the Sea of Cortez. It is approximately 1200 kilometers south of the US/Mexico border. The historic town of Loreto, known as Concho (red mangrove) in the local language is the oldest European settlement in Baja California. The area was established in 1697. Loreto boasts nearly 250 km of coastline, 750 square km. of sea and 14 islands. The Sierra La Giganta mountain range, one of the tallest and most spectacular in Baja, overlooks the town of Loreto and creates breathtaking panoramic vistas. The surrounding desert is rich with unique plant and animal life and the water teems with aquatic life, creating unlimited eco-touristic opportunities. The weather of Loreto is generally warm with more than 300 sunny days and a year round temperature averaging in the 80’s. We dropped anchor in the harbor at 8:00am and tender service into Loreto began. Once on shore we hired a local taxi for a tour of the quite town. Loreto has much to offer for the entire family. In addition to its legendary sportfishing, you can enjoy numerous outdoor activities such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, golf, beachcombing, horseback riding, tennis, kayaking and sailing. On a trip to the nearby islands, you can marvel at the marine life that includes sea lions, exotic birds, playful dolphins and whales. In the mountains at nearby San Javier, you can explore ancient missions and captivate your mind with the local history. At Nopolo Sports Center you will find a seaside golf course with 18 challenging holes and a tennis center containing nine lighted courts, a stadium and a swimming pool. At 6:00pm we set sail for our next port of call Pichilingue.

Pichilingue

P1010109On November 14 we docked in Pichilingue our fifth port of call. Pichilingue is referred to as the entry point to La Paz. Located on a large bay on the Sea of Cortez, 16 km away from La Paz, the port has a fishing dock, acommercial dock and a cruise ship terminal. Our choice of shore excursion was Paradise Cove Kayaking. From the pier we were taken to Balandra Beach and given a short briefing on our kayak. This was mine & my husbands first attempt at kayaking and we decide it would be our last together. We couldn’t get together on the paddling, we seemed to keep going to the left instead of straight. We did manage to paddle into paradise cove and view the abundance of local birds and into a natural mangrove forest. Some of our group traveled by bus into the city of La Paz. It is a real Mexican city where 170,000 Mexicans live and work. It dedicates just a five block strip for tourist shops, restaurants and tours. Local business establishments intermingle with tourist stops and give the city a lived – in feeling. La Paz is quickly establishing itself as Baja’s eco-tourism center with a wide variety of tours offered by professionals dedicated to preserving the environment. Others stayed in port and watched the folkloric dance group perform in the cruise sip terminal or shopped in the local market stalls. At 6:00pm we set sail for our last stop – Cabo San Lucas.

Cabo San Lucas

P1010160The final port of call on Kaleidoscope Travel & Cruise’s recent group cruise tour was Cabo San Lucas. The resort town of Cabo San Lucas is named for the slender cape extending eastward from Baja’s southernmost tip, gradually developed into a tourist hot spot the last forty years. Today, Los Cabos is booming and is currently the seventh most popular tourist destination in Mexico and the second fastest growing resort community in the country. Cabo has been blessed with what many describe as the perfect climate. Average year-round temperature is 25 degrees, it is a little cooler in the winter and a bit warmer in the summer. For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private yacht owners. They flocked here to be near “Marlin Alley”, as the waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved, as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world. . Cabo’s signature landmark is El Arco (“The Arch”), a rock formation at the tip of “Land’s End,” where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. A boat trip there is a must, if only to come face to face with the hundreds of noisy sea lions who reside on the rock formations. If you have time, hire a water taxi to take you to “Lovers Beach,” the only beach in the world bounded by two different oceans. A whale watching excursion is another “must do,” if you are there between December and March, when thousands of California gray whales and other species are making their nnual migration from colder climates.

Royal Caribbean – Freedom of the Seas

freedomoftheseasRoyal Caribbean biggest ship to date, the Freedom of the Sea will set sail in June from Miami – sailing 7-day Western Caribbean Cruises. While Freedom of the Seas will feature many of Royal Caribbean’s signatures – ice skating rink, indoor promenade and rock climbing wall – the 158,000-ton, 3,600-passenger ship also offer more unique-to-cruising features. Easily the most impressive sight will be the pool deck area. Freedom of the Seas will have three separate pool areas. Absolutely, the coolest new spot will be the H2O Zone, a fabulous interactive water park. Whimsical and playful — and most definitely aimed at families – features include numerous water-spouting contraptions, such as a waterfall, umbrella jets, a cone spill bucket, spray cannons and spray loops all decorated as colorful sculptures. There are two splash pools as well, one of which will have a current that shoots water around a central island. At night, this area, with the integration of a fantastic and dynamic lighting system, will be transformed into a sculpture garden. The surf park, a 32-foot-wide by 40-foot-long FlowRider, looks a bit like a swim-against-the-current pool that’s been propped up on a 45-degree angle; a three-inch sheet of water actually flows up the incline to create a wave-like reverse waterfall. Riders can surf or body board against the continuous flow of water moving at an impressive speed of 30,000 gallons per minute. Another first-ever feature is a dedicated sports pool in the main pool area. There are two side-by-side pools that comprise that part of the deck, one will be used almost exclusively for athletic pool games, ranging from basketball and volleyball to and synchronized swimming.

The countryside is dotted with cacti and plantation houses. Europeans have enjoyed Curacao’s lively culture, first rate shopping and outstanding diving for years. The island is ringed with reefs that support a diverse abundance of coral and sea life. It’s not uncommon to see dolphins, turtles, or pilot whales. Over 60 dive sites, several wrecks and nearly 40 beaches. Some additional highlights on the island include the Hato Caves, once used as eerie shelters for early inhabitants and escaped slaves. The spectacular stalagmites and stalactites are still being formed by the steady dripping waters. Fort Lauderdale

100 2411On November 11th Anita Dyck owner of Kaleidoscope Travel & Cruiseescorted a group to Fort Lauderdale and then aboard the MS Volendam for a 10-day Caribbean Cruise. After an enjoyable flight we settled into our hotelin Fort Lauderdale. The next morning we were met by our guides from the Everglades Day Safari Company. Our first stop was a truly amazing airboat ride through the sawgrass prairie into the Miccosukee Indian reservation. Here we had our first close up look at the alligators. It was a remarkable ride. Next we drove to the town of Everglades for a southern lunch complete with deep fried alligator nuggets. Along the way we saw gators large and small everywhere in the ditches. We stopped at a photo gallery and there on the grass near the parking lot was a alligator sunning himself. After lunch we enjoyed a relaxing 90 minute boat ride from Everglades National Park as it worked its way through the 10,000 Islands to the Gulf of Mexico. On this fully narrated ride we were able to see dolphin, manatees and many shore birds. What a great day. At 8:00pm the group met in the hotel lobby for a Bon Voyage Party hosted by Kaleidoscope Travel & Cruise.

Aruba

100 2503Welcome to Aruba the first port of call on Kaleidoscope Travel & Cruise’s Southern Caribbean group cruise. Aruba is located in the heart of the southern Caribbean, 20 kilometers off the coast of Venezuela. It is 30 kilometers long and 9 kilometers across, at its widest point. The vegetation of Aruba is unusual for a Caribbean island. On the south and west coasts there are miles of pristine white beaches that rank among the most beautiful in the world. The northeast coast, along the windward shore, is rugged and wild. The interior is desert like with a variety of cacti and dramatic rock formations. The island’s most famous trees are the watapana, or divi-divi trees, all permanently sculpted into graceful, southwest-bending shapes by the constant trade winds. Our choice of shore excursion was the Aruba Town and Countryside Tour. We drove through the picturesque city of Oranjestad on our way to the Aloe Factory, where we received a tour of thefactory and its amazing products. Then it was off to the Casibari Rocks, for such a flat island, the presence of these unusual mountains and huge boulders that dot the countryside are truly amazing. These strange puzzling geological formations contain large quartzdiorite stone and provide adventure seekers with an “unexplained” mystery. Our next stop was the Natural Bridge. On September 5, 2005 the 100-foot long rock bridge fell into the ocean after centuries of pounding by the surf. The island’s most famous natural archway was carved out of the limestone coast and came to be one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the entire Caribbean. We were able to view a mini natural bridge at the same location. After the tour we headed back to the pier for some duty free shopping before the ship set sail at for our next port of call – Willemstad Curacao.

Dominica

100 2615Our third port of call on our recent Southern Caribbean group cruise was the island of Dominica. The island belongs to the leeward island group in the Lesser Antilles. Domincia’s rugged mountains and lush valleys create the picture of a tropical paradise, but unlike other regional destinations, there are relatively few beaches. We arrived here at 7:00am on November 19th – a beautiful sunny day, the high temperature was 27 Degrees. We had an early morning shore excursion called The best of Dominica scenic drive. As we left the pier and our beautiful ship, we had a leisurely drive that took us through the beautiful forests and plantations of Dominica’s Layou Valley. We saw the mountain peaks carpeted in rich rain forest foliage and the colorful tropical flowers and banana, mango, cocoa, citrus, papaya and avocado trees en route to Morne Bruce, the Botanical Gardens with the Sisserou and Jaco Parrots. We continue through Roseau and past the Springfield Plantation House. Passing through the Layou Valley, we stopped for a taste of local juice, rum punch and a sample of Dominica’s folklore dancing. The scenic coastal roads lead through fishing villages and the Canefield Estate back to Roseau. Domicia was also home to some of the production of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest.

St Thomas

100 2661St Thomas was our fourth port of call on our recent group cruise. At 7:00am on November 20 the MS Volendam docked in the city of Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the United States Virgin Islands and the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean. Charlotte Amalie is named after a Danish Queen. Near the pier you will find a world-famous shopping center. Since the tradewinds brought the Schooner and Clipper Ships, St. Thomas has been a duty free port. Other Caribbean Islands have only recently endorsed the duty-free concept. As a result, Virgin Island Merchants offer lower prices and more varied product offerings. The centuries old warehouses stretch the downtown waterfront to Dronnigens Gade (Main Street). They once held Molasses, Lumber, Rum, and Spices awaiting export and Trade goods such as manufactured items, ceramics, gold, and gems brought from around the world. The warehouses are now tastefully converted and restored to house retail stores with products and prices to satisfy the most demanding clients. Our next port of call was Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, Holland America’s private island. Hawaii Circle Cruise

VolcanoFlowAug2002The first stop on our upcoming group cruise is Lahaina – we will spend two full days exploring the area. Often called the “jewel in the crown of Maui,” Lahaina is a destination that is experienced by two million people annually. Lahaina town is the second most visited spot on Maui after the beaches. Lahaina is a historic town, which is nestled between the calm waters of the Auau Channel facing Lana’i island and the fertile peaks and valleys of Mauna Kahalawai . It has provided a home for many cultures over the centuries, always welcoming visitors to its inviting shores. Next we are off to spend the day at Honolulu. World-famous Waikiki was once a playground for Hawaiian royalty. Known in Hawaiian as “spouting waters,” Today, Waikiki is a vibrant gathering place for visitors from around the world. You may choose to spend your time visiting Pearl Harbor or the Polynesian Culture Centre. Our third port of call is Hilo – Hawaii’s biggest small town lies at the feet of three volcanoes, Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest; Mauna Loa, the world’s most voluminous; and Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. The hottest show in town is due south in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our final stop in the Hawaiian Island will be Kailua-Kona. From scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean to hiking up the side of a volcano, Kailua-Kona features a wealth of activities that cater to everyone. Located on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii, Kailua-Kona has a variety of aquatic activities that are available in the area, including kayaking, rafting, and snorkeling.

Italy

14 26 51 Trevi Fountain Rome Italy web 1 Italy dips down out of Europe and into the Mediterranean – Breathtaking. Italians are also known for once having an empire that stretched across the globe, and for having the most spectacular churches, frescos, sculptures and Renaissance paintings in all of Europe. The Italy of today is littered with the relics of more than 3,000 years of history, and an atmosphere that ranges from the Armani-wearing-scooter-driving-espresso-drinking buzz of its cities to the quiet, pastoral existence of its hillside olive farms and seaside fishing villages. From the depths of the canals in Venice, which floats on a series of islands in an Adriatic lagoon, and the bleached sands of San Remo on the Riviera, to the rocky crags of the Alps, Dolomites and Apennines, Italy has everything from beach holidays to luxury mountain ski resorts. Italy’s cities reveal awe-inspiring architecture from the curved arches of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence to the crumbling magnificence of the Colosseum in Rome. Home of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Carvaggio and Botticelli, its artworks are a visual delight to all visitors. Nestled into the outskirts of Rome is the independent Vatican City, the seat of the Pope and home to the famous St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The influence of the Holy Catholic Church on the people of Italy is still evident today in a series of holy festivals, carnivals, and parades involving young and old alike in almost every city, town and village.

Costa Rica

costa rica sunset 1 Known for its spectacular natural beauty and biodiversity, Costa Rica boasts over 15 different ecosystems with dramatic changes in landscapes, climate and nature. Magnificent beaches stretch for miles along an unspoilt coastline; high on the mountains, cool and pristine cloud forests are alive with mysterious sounds and below splendid tropical rain forests are packed with life. The country is famous for its progressive approach to conservation and is the prime eco-tourism destination in Central America due to its wealth of protected areas. Over 25 percent of the country is protected, spread between 75 different national parks, wildlife refuges and biological reserves. In such a small geographical area it is surprising how much there is to see and do. There are activities to suit all travelers and any mood, from action to relaxation. These include surfing, snorkeling and sunbathing, horse riding, hiking and wildlife-spotting, deep sea fishing or river cruises. One can also simply enjoy a soak in the hot springs. Travelers are also drawn to the country because of the endearing Tico hospitality. Costa Ricans are known for their incredible gregariousness and delightful ability to pamper guests – whether pointing out the right direction or cooking a typical authentic meal, they will be full of smiles and warmth. All this together with easy accessibility and an efficient infrastructure makes Costa Rica the jewel of Central America and a gem of a vacation destination.

US Virgin Islands

Property British Virgin Islands 000 1 Of the 60 mostly uninhabited islands that make up the US Virgin Islands, the biggest and most visited are St Thomas, St John and St Croix. The energetic capital of Charlotte Amalie, with its attractive harbor, lies on St Thomas. This island is the most Americanized of the chain, famous for its world-class duty-free shopping. Nearby St John is an unspoilt nature lover’s paradise, with most of its forests, pristine beaches and reefs part of a protected national park. The largest of the islands is St Croix and its remoteness from the others, the historic remnants scattered about the landscape, the pretty Danish-influenced towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted, and the snorkeling at nearby Buck Island are the attractions here. Surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean, these islands boast some of the most splendid coastline in the world, with white sandy beaches, astonishing coral reefs and pristine marine life, secluded coves, and untouched rainforests rising up above the sea-swept landscape. Caribbean color touches every aspect of the islands, blending with the strong Danish influence in the town. Local craftsmen display their unique island art along cobblestone alleyways; busy markets supply the essentials for a delicious cuisine; and the sounds of folk songs and calypso bands fill the air. The Virgin Islands being among the most popular cruise ship destinations in the Caribbean has meant that the port towns of Charlotte Amalie and Christiansted are usually swamped with newly arrived passengers in a frenzy of shopping and dining. Main beaches are seldom deserted, and the key reef areas are often a flurry of flippers and snorkels. Luxury resorts and fine hotels share the streets with old colonial architecture. Yet it is still possible to escape the crowds and find that bit of elusive paradise, to relax away from the divers and sailors, the sightseers, the ecological tour groups, and the shoppers.

Barcelona

barcelona palace450 1 01The enchanting city of Barcelona is a visual delight, and has an atmosphere that combines elegance and sophistication withprovincial charm. In exploring its streets you’ll discover medieval romance in its Gothic quarter and the awe-inspiring delights of the fantastic and sometimes outrageous Art Nouveau architecture of Gaudi and his contemporaries. The cable car up Montjuic both offer breathtaking views over this city. Its skyline is perhaps most famous for Antoni Gaudi’s masterwork, the still incomplete church of the Sagrada Familia, as well as the city’s huge Gothic cathedral. The artistic legacy of Barcelona is one of the city’s most appealing offerings, with museums containing extensive collections of the works of Miro and Picasso. Barcelona is also a shopping Mecca, with the city’s flair for style reflected in its numerous boutiques and markets, open late into the afternoons. As the sun sets, and the city’s many bars and restaurants open, the night comes alive. Dinner is served at any time between nine o’clock and midnight, and the festivities around the bars and nightclubs carry on well into the early hours of the morning. Barcelona is the commercial centre of the popular holiday region known as the Costa Brava, the northernmost Mediterranean seafront in Spain, as well as the Costa Dorada to the south. The coast is dotted with popular resort towns, many retaining their age-old charm, which can be easily reached from the city.
