Our third port of call on our recent Southern Caribbean group cruise was the island of Dominica. The island belongs to the leeward island group in the Lesser Antilles. Domincia’s rugged mountains and lush valleys create the picture of a tropical paradise, but unlike other regional destinations, there are relatively few beaches. We arrived here at 7:00am on November 19th – a beautiful sunny day, the high temperature was 27 Degrees. We had an early morning shore excursion called The best of Dominica scenic drive. As we left the pier and our beautiful ship, we had a leisurely drive that took us through the beautiful forests and plantations of Dominica’s Layou Valley. We saw the mountain peaks carpeted in rich rain forest foliage and the colorful tropical flowers and banana, mango, cocoa, citrus, papaya and avocado trees en route to Morne Bruce, the Botanical Gardens with the Sisserou and Jaco Parrots. We continue through Roseau and past the Springfield Plantation House. Passing through the Layou Valley, we stopped for a taste of local juice, rum punch and a sample of Dominica’s folklore dancing. The scenic coastal roads lead through fishing villages and the Canefield Estate back to Roseau. Domicia was also home to some of the production of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest.
